Chapter 1: Introduction to Medical Assisting

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After completing Chapter 1, students should be able to:

1.1 Recognize the duties and responsibilities of a medical assistant.

1.2 Distinguish various organizations related to the medical assisting profession.

1.3 Explain the need for and importance of the medical assistant credentials.

1.4 Identify the training needed to become a professional medical assistant.

1.5 Discuss professional development as it relates to medical assisting education.

Lecture Outline

Learning Outcome 1.1: Recognize the duties and responsibilities of a medical assistant.

  • Lecture Topics
    • Review the entry-level and advanced duties of the medical assistant, including general, administrative, clinical, and laboratory. (Refer to Table 1-1: Daily Duties of Medical Assistants and PowerPoint Slide 1- 3)
  • Discussion Points
    • Discuss the factors that influence the responsibilities of the medical assistant:
      • Location and size of the facility.
      • Medical specialty.
    • Discuss ways in which medical assistants can function as patient navigators:
      • Provide assistance in finding or obtaining necessary resources.
      • Overcome barriers that may prevent patients from receiving timely care.
      • Help patients navigate paperwork, including insurance forms.
    • Learning Activities
      • Give each student an index card. On one side, have students write duties they think medical assistants perform. On the reverse side, have them write personal characteristics they believe good medical assistants should have. Collect the cards and read aloud from some of them. Invite the class to comment on the ideas generated.
      • Group your students in threes and provide each group with 38 index cards. Refer to Table 1-1: Daily Duties of Medical Assistants and have group members write 1 of the 34 entry-level general, administrative, clinical, or laboratory duties on each index card. On the remaining 4 cards, have students write the headings General, Administrative, Clinical, and Laboratory. Then have the groups place the heading cards side-by-side on a desk. Have students in each group take turns picking a duty card and placing it beneath the correct heading card. Encourage group members to discuss why each duty fits its assigned category. Afterward, point out the more advanced duties for which experienced medical assistants may also be responsible (examples are listed in the second column of the table). Also, discuss specialization opportunities available to medical assistants within differing medical specialties.

Learning Outcome 1.2: Distinguish various organizations related to the medical assisting profession.

  • Lecture Topics
    • Teach your students that the medical assisting profession is influenced by a multitude of professional associations. Emphasize the fact that knowledge of these organizations will influence their future career choices.
  • Discussion Point
    • American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA): what is its purpose?
    • How can the AAMA assist you with furthering your career?

  • Learning Activities
    • Have students work in pairs or small groups to review the areas of competence in the AAMA Occupational Analysis 2012-2013:

Twelve Most Frequently Performed Responsibilities

  1. Abide by principles and laws related to confidentiality.
  2. Adapt communications to an individual’s understanding.
  3. Demonstrate respect for individual diversity (culture, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, age, economic status).
  4. Employ professional techniques during verbal, non-verbal, and text-based interactions.
  5. Comply with risk management and safety procedures.
  6. Interact with staff and patients to optimize workflow efficiency.
